Massage Therapist Insurance
Why You Need Massage Therapist Insurance, and Where to Get
It
If you are studying to become a massage therapist, or getting ready to launch your own massage therapy business,
then you might be wondering whether massage therapist insurance is necessary. It is, and here is why.
Litigious Society
Unfortunately, we live in a society where litigation is the norm, rather than the exception. When people feel
wronged, whether it’s legitimate or not, there’s a good chance that their first port of call will be their lawyers
office. Like many medical professionals, and those in healing practices, massage therapists are often the target
for this sort of case. It’s best, for this reason, to have massage therapist insurance, and never need it, than to
need it, and not have it.
Healing Arts Also Subject to Human Error
Another good reason to have massage therapist insurance is that although there’s no doubt that you have your
patient’s best interests at heart; there is always the chance of human error, through no fault of your own.
Even the very best massage therapists sometimes make mistakes, and it’s at those times that massage therapist
insurance is necessary.
What to Consider When Choosing a Policy
Of course, not all massage therapist insurance policies are created equal – you will need to consider several
factors before you decide. These include:
• What the coverage amount is. This varies from policy to policy, and is the maximum amount your policy will cover
in the event of a claim.
• Whether the massage therapist insurance policy includes the cost of legal defense. Some do not, and, in the case
of a court battle, you might be left out of pocket.
• Endorsements. There may be times when you need to include other people, like employers and landlords on your
massage therapist insurance policy – find out whether that can be accommodated, and whether there is any additional
cost.
• Location coverage. Some policies cover one location only, while others will cover you regardless of where you
work. If you own your own practice, and treat patients in their homes, this is critical – so that you are covered
wherever you work.
• Find out whether the policy you choose covers specialized treatments too – such as hot stone treatments. Many do
not cover newer therapies, and if you’re not covered, you won’t be able to offer those services.
• Make sure that whoever you choose to take a massage therapist insurance policy with has a 24 hour support center.
There’s nothing worse than needing to contact someone in another part of the country, and not being able to reach
an actual person!
Finding Policies
Massage therapist insurance policies are offered by most of the massage therapist organizations and associations
out there. They are underwritten by a variety of well known insurance companies, and they are easy to apply for,
online or by phone.
Be sure you check out several policies, and compare the benefits and the costs of each, before signing up. That
way, you can be sure you have the best massage therapist insurance policy for you, and you can practice at ease,
knowing you are covered for any claims that might arise.
